The Visit
We sat
outside yesterday afternoon in warm June sun,
I was visiting my little granddaughter here in Tennessee,
She's only two and a half you see.
Her dad's not here anymore, but sure seems he should be.
They'd just bought this little home-to-be
A few months ago.
Settle down after roaming 'round, start living the good
life;
Leave behind the stress and strife
Of being on the move in the military.
But my little dear one doesn't know Dad’s gone for good,
"My Daddy's off at work,
And can't come home as much anymore."
So we play in the sun; we pick "flowers" in the new yard,
We ride the tricycle; she models the tiny swimsuit I brought
her,
And an old funny hat that was in her toy box.
As we play, I take snapshots, and I love her,
And her daddy and her mother;
And my heart falls down in the lonely warm sand at our feet.
